A note from the Founder

Hey there!

My name is Kacey, and I’m the founder of the Hungry Typewriter. I started this company back in 2007 with the purpose of making words mean business—for clients and fellow creatives.

We do things a little differently around here. We’re a guild more than an agency, a team of freelancers dedicating ourselves to the craft and the client. We work hard and fast. We have fun. And we support small businesses all over the country by creating copy and content that delights and delivers.

We also have the occasional brownie.

I’ll be the first to tell you that this job, this little company, and this approach isn’t for everyone. But if you find yourself nodding along to the bullets below like the beat to a 1990s mixtape, I encourage you to put yourself out there. We’ve got some pretty big plans coming down the pike, and we can’t do it without you.

~Kacey.

Good to know

Before we dive in, a few important points

This is a 1099 contract position.

It’s perfect for writers and side-hustlers seeking flexible, on-demand, 100% virtual, part-time work (about 10 hours per week/40 hours per month). If you’ve got the skills and availability, we’ll keep you busy!

All work is paid per project (not per hour).

Project rates are based on demonstrated skill level and the average time it should take to complete the task (including one round of edits). We work together to make you efficient—and ridiculously good.

Contributor Must-Haves

We work with and develop lightly seasoned writers who have a better-than-basic understanding of copywriting concepts and strategies.

Great copywriters can learn and do more in a year than most can in an entire career, so preference will be given to candidates who can walk the talk—not to those who have time on their side.

The list below outlines our minimum candidate requirements.

Have what it takes?

You should get excited if…

This isn’t your first rodeo.

Your current/former lives include marketing, sales, creative writing, and content strategy—and you’ve been paid for these endeavors. (Note: Most of the team has never been to an actual rodeo—but it’s on the list.)

Your words get results—and you can prove it.

You can write results-driven copy for all media including websites, brand work, emails, and (so much) more.

You love crushing deadlines

and are available to communicate your assignment status with the team.

YouR drafts don’t require heavy-handed editing.

You absorb intricate project details like a sponge. You take feedback and direction well because you know it will only make you better at what you do—and you love what you do.

You aren’t afraid to learn, write, or be something new.

You love slipping into character and thrive at (and in!) capturing the voice and messaging goals of your client. You enjoy doing the odd bit of research necessary to speak conversationally about topics in your wheelhouse and outside your comfort zone.

You like a good power tool.

You know your way around ClickUp, Zoom, Slack, the Google suite, and the social media set—and if you don’t, you’re willing to learn!

Can you…

…say yes to this chemistry test?

You aren’t scrambling for by-lines and credit.

A lot of what we do falls into the field of “corporate ghostwriting,” so discretion and confidentiality are paramount. In most cases, you’ll need to detach your ego from the final product, flying under the radar to support the overall mission. (Don’t worry—we’ll celebrate plenty as a team!)

You love writing marketing copy—but hate marketing yourself.

We’re a great fit for side-hustlers who want to expand their wallets, experience, and creativity, but don’t want to be “out there” hunting for work.

You can tactfully give and receive team feedback.

And the thought of hanging out with other badass creatives (who are also fantastically humble and delightfully awkward) gives you butterflies.

You have a visual approach to your writing

And it gives you a satisfying thrill to see your words look as good as you made them sound and feel.

HOLD UP. These are dealbreakers.

Do not apply for this position if...

  • You want to maintain full copyright on all of your material or are trying to pad your portfolio. Most of your work will fall under NDA.

  • You can’t work with 48-72 hour turnaround times. We do our best to book work a week in advance, but we need to bake in time for review, etc.

  • You cannot provide writing samples. We need to know what you’re working with.

  • You hate puns and don’t use the Oxford comma. (Just kidding. But seriously.)
